The Cs were a busy family—both parents and their four children loved being outdoors swimming, fishing and camping. Their house in rural Massachusetts seemed like the perfect place to raise four active kids. But when their second child was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of seven, huge challenges faced this once happy family.
The drive to the hospital for Little C’s constant treatments is an hour and a half away. With Dad working full-time to support the family, this leaves Mom to take her sick little girl and three other children on these long trips to the hospital. The oldest reads to the youngest in the backseat, while the five-year-old, the only boy in a string of girls, plays with action figures. Little C usually sleeps.
While this system works to keep the family together and allows them to pay the bills, it has left no money for anything else, and Little C’s medical bills are stacking up. With the increase in food costs and the bulk of Dad’s income going toward getting their little girl better, food has been hard to come by for this family of six.
The Cs are focused on taking it one day at a time, and dream of a day when a family camping trip is possible because Little C is again just a little girl, and not also a patient. $1,500 by October 31st gets rid of their anxiety about where their next meal is coming from and keeps this tight-knit family focused on Little C’s recovery.
