When Ms. G buried her mother one year ago, she could never have imagined the next funeral she would be attending: that of her beloved sister. Just a few months after their mother died, Ms. G’s older sister passed away in her home city of Santo Domingo.

Having just recovered financially from the first funeral, Ms. G had to plan and pay for an unexpected funeral over 1,500 miles away. Simply getting there meant airfare and leaving behind her three children, one of whom has a learning disability and requires constant care. On top of that there were medical expenses, funeral arrangements, and the constant feeling of grief looming over everyday life.

Ms. G is part of a tight-knit family that holds their Dominican heritage close. Even as their accents become more Bostonian and their children grow up Americans, their roots remain vitally intact. When Ms. G brought back her niece from the Dominican Republic she introduced her to her three cousins, whom she now considers new siblings. Losing her mother was hard, but it would have been unbearable had she not had Ms. G.

Helping this family with their back-rent guarantees them a stable home now and in the future. Until Ms. G faced the unexpected tragedy of losing her sister, she had never been behind on her rent. $1,800 by March 15th gives a family dealing with grief the chance to recover and begin again.
