The earthquake in Haiti claimed the life of a beloved mother of two from the Boston area. She was visiting her ailing parents in Port-au-Prince hoping to offer support and reconnect with family members she hadn’t seen since she immigrated. When the earthquake struck, the family she left behind in Massachusetts did not receive much news. Even weeks later they know of just one cousin confirmed dead. Others, like their mother, grandparents, aunts and uncles, seem simply to have vanished.
Now, a widower father of two children, ages 12 and 13, is worried about eviction while he struggles with grief. A few months ago, the Vs were forced out of their home when their landlord faced foreclosure. They found a new apartment where the landlord was willing to delay the deadline on the security deposit and first and last months’ rent but now those bills are due.
Mr. V works full-time as a security guard and hopes to go to college someday to pursue a degree in Criminal Justice. His children are surrounded by friends at school and they look forward to weekends when their extended family all gets together for church and Sunday dinner. This family began with nothing but each other when they first immigrated, and have since made a home in Boston.
The earthquake in Haiti struck them deeply and their recovery has only just begun. $1,400 by March 15th gives a Haitian widower and his two children the chance they need to start. How can you help?
