This is the story of a four-year-old standing in a doorway. If the door slams in his face, he is homeless. If it closes gently behind him, he has the potential for a better life.
In the past two years, two of his mom’s brothers were shot and killed in the housing development where they live. Dealing with the aftermath of this violence has been hard.
His mom has been juggling the questions about why her brothers were targeted, the grief of the loss, the joy of her pregnancy and the stress of supporting her own mother, who’s in and out of hospitals with suicidal behavior.
Emotionally, they’re working with HomeStart to get themselves back on solid ground. But financially, they have nowhere to turn. They’ve been taken to court for non-payment of rent. And Mom’s small income is not enough to get them out of trouble.
Against all odds, she’s been taking big steps toward a better life. She’s in a medical assistant program and looks forward to being able to support herself and her kids when she graduates.
In the meantime, her son loves reciting his ABCs. He can’t wait for kindergarten next September. And he’s excited at the idea of being big brother to the baby due this month.
Can you help keep the door from slamming in his face? This family needs $2,000 by April 16th for the back rent. Once she’s a medical assistant, Mom hopes to get her kids out of the housing development, but right now their best chance for a future starts with being able to stay in their home.
