Often when families find themselves in financial turmoil it is because of a perfect storm of troubles. For Mrs. H, who currently houses three generations under one roof, the perfect storm began last fall, when hip replacement surgery forced her out of work. Her daughter moved in with her infant son to reduce her own living expenses and provide her mother with an extra income.
All seemed to be going well until Mrs. H’s daughter was laid off from her job as a healthcare aide. While it seemed devastating at the time, the silver lining was that her daughter had a home to live in with her son and didn’t have to worry about eviction while searching for new employment.
However, things would soon get much worse. Mrs. H got a call from her father in North Carolina. He had been diagnosed with terminal cancer and given only a few months. Not knowing what else to do, Mrs. H got on a plane to visit her father and make arrangements for what they knew was coming. Returning home, she waited until the time came to go back down to North Carolina for a funeral. The travel expenses and funeral costs on top of the burden of her daughter’s unemployment and her own disability put Mrs. H behind on three months’ rent: a perfect storm of troubles.
Helping this family means they can avoid homelessness despite the challenges of the past few months. Giving this mother and daughter a second chance sets them up for a more positive future and allows a toddler to grow up in a loving and stable home. $1,500 by March 30th makes all that possible.
