The past few months of L’s life read like an implausible novel. Her husband of two months asked one morning that she accompany him to go pick up a cousin at Logan Airport. Thinking little of it, she got in the car and drove him to the terminal he requested. Suspend disbelief for a moment and picture this: L’s husband popping the trunk, grabbing a packed suitcase and running toward a nearly empty security gate. Before she could muster a response, L’s husband had disappeared. In the packed suitcase? L’s nest egg: a small inheritance from her recently deceased father.

Fast forward two months. L has received a 48-hour eviction notice from her landlord. Apparently, L’s husband had not been paying the bills but instead spending L’s money elsewhere. With a flurry of phone calls to social workers and advocates, and some very long days of extra hours as a house-cleaner, L scraped together enough money to ward off eviction threats temporarily. But the insecurity of L’s financial future looms over everyday life like a guillotine.

L has a two year-old son to take care of and a new life that she does not recognize. Getting this single mom back on her feet does not require the drama of the last three months. Instead, it means catching up on back-rent, thereby avoiding homelessness and setting this small family on a safe course. $1,059 by May 15th fills the gap and gives L and her little boy the financial security they need to move on. How can you help?
